Danish structure studio Adept has used customised curved bricks to clad the five-storey Theodora Home housing block alongside the Elephant Gate on the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen.
Constructed as a part of a masterplan to redevelop the Carlsberg Brewery web site within the Carlsberg Metropolis district in central Copenhagen, Adept designed the housing to proceed the native custom of brick buildings, however with a contemporary twist.
“The buildings within the space are a mixture of historic buildings remodeled into trendy function in addition to new residential complexes, workplace areas and public features,” defined Adept associate Anders Lonka.
“We wished to create a design that was virtually zipped along with the historic buildings in materials, color and texture – and informed a narrative of what got here earlier than, but had its personal trendy impression in particulars and structure,” he informed Dezeen.
The five-storey block stands subsequent to the ornamental Elephant Gate on the positioning of a former yeast storage constructing. One wing of this constructing, which has an ornamental brick facade, was retained and accommodates 4,130 sq. metres of workplace area.
Linked to this block, three new wings have been constructed round an inside courtyard. These wings accommodates 58 flats on the higher flooring, with a restaurant, cafe and three retailers on the bottom flooring.
Adept designed customised brick detailing, utilising a mixture of flat and curved bricks, for the brand new constructing’s street-facing facades.
“The listed entrance of the previous yeast storage, with its attribute clock tower that varieties a part of Theodora Home, is tremendous detailed in its brickwork,” defined Lonka.
“An virtually flowerish sample is dotted all around the east facade. We wished to create a contemporary pendant to this sort of historic ornament and make it an built-in aspect, as an alternative of merely a method of laying bond and mortar.”
“The artistic use of brick decorations within the facades is quite common within the Carlsberg Metropolis, each within the historic buildings from the 1800 – 1900 and in trendy additions to the advanced, just like the fairly wonderful Hanging Gardens by Svenn Eske Kristensen from the 1960s,” continued Lonka.
“We wish to suppose that Theodora Home carries this custom ahead.”
The inner courtyard has been designed to dramatically distinction the exterior facades and lots of brick buildings discovered on the brewery web site.
At current the facades are white with timber trellising, however in time these will change into inexperienced partitions as crops develop up the timber framework. These inexperienced partitions and the small park have been designed by panorama architect WERK, which additionally created most of the surrounding squares.
“Carlsberg Metropolis is a really homogeneous city plan, the primarily red-ish brick facades makes for a really robust and coherent character,” stated Lonka.
“WERK designed the panorama as a small gem, semi-accessible to the general public and we wished the inside façade to replicate the considered this hidden oasis within the metropolis,” he continued. “The geometric patterns of the facades will in time be inexperienced with crops that climb the picket trellises – and the general impression will then be far more garden-like.”
To entry this courtyard Adept designed a sequence of ornamental metal gates that incorporate motifs of historic yeast storage.
Copenhagen-based structure studio Adept is lead by Lonka, Martin Krogh, Martin Laursen and affiliate associate Simon Poulsen. The studio is working with architects Rolvung og Brøndsted Arkitekter to design Denmark’s first purpose-built structure college and beforehand designed the Dalarna Media Library in Sweden.
